You may already know this, but the predecessor to all these blogs was an email group called VWAR-L. It was run by a professor of history at Buffalo University named Dr. Lydia Fish. And she did wonderful work. It was during the early 1990s before the WWW. The group motto was, “Write or die, motherfucker”. I’m convinced there are comrades alive today because of that group. A few times we gathered for dinner after Memorial Day at a Vietnamese Restaurant in Arlington. I think it was called Nam Viet, but I’m not sure. There was no editing of what people wrote. They would write and send to Lydia and she would send out each day. Some stories would tear your heart out of your chest. There was once a story about a marine so seriously wounded and they couldn’t get to him and he asked a fellow marine to kill him. I have seen almost no stories like this. The closest was Ambrose Bierce who wrote a piece entitled, “Incident at Owl Creek”. Bierce was a columnist for Randolph Hearst’s newspaper in San Francisco. He was a Christian before the civil war but afterwards wrote a book entitled, “The Devils Dictionary”. One of the best stories on VWAR-L was written by Sonny Hoffman. He wrote a story entitled, “I Took Grandma to Nam”. I have used it many times to explain how hard it was for those families who stayed behind. I haven’t spoken to Sonny for many years, but here is the story:

Congratulations. I have gained some inspiration from your site to relate some of the tales of my service. Next month (in about 33 days) I will celebrate the 63d anniversary of my enlistment and about 90 days after that the 60th anniversary of my commissioning as a 2d LT. .
I was driving a jeep in a Cav squadron when the wall went up in Berlin. I thought I was going to be an 18 year old speed bump for a Motorized Rifle Rgt. had we gone to war. We had already made it thru the Bay of Pigs fiasco and were (unbeknownst to us line wienies) going to go thru the Cuban Missile Crisis the next year. Vietnam was barely on anyone’s radar. But it got bigger
Thanks for your good work.
