THESE ARE THE RESULTS OF AN UNOFFICIAL POLL TAKEN ON FACEBOOK AFTER THE PUBLICATION OF THIS ORIGINAL ARTICLE; IT WAS POSTED ON BOTH OF MY FB PAGES AND ON 59 DIFFERENT VETERAN GROUP PAGES. UNFORTUNATELY, “VOTES” WERE NOT PLACED ON THE OFFICIAL ATTACHED POLL AND INSTEAD, READERS CITED THEIR “BEST VIETNAM MOVIES” IN THE POST COMMENT SECTION. SO, I CREATED AN EXCEL LIST AND TALLIED THESE RECOMMENDATIONS BY HAND DAILY FOR THE PAST WEEK – RESULTS ARE COMPILED IN THE CHART BELOW. ALL RECOMMENDATIONS ARE INCLUDED – SEVERAL NOT BEING TITLES, BUT MENTIONED ACROSS THE DIFFERENT PAGES. SOMEBODY ALSO SAID THAT WE SHOULD NOW VOTE ON THE WORST VIETNAM WAR MOVIE…MAYBE AT A LATER DATE.

I like the pictures and stories of Vietnam. I was there in 1972 on board the USS Savannah AOR – 4. It was a supply ship, carried: fuel, ammo, food, mail, movies, a floating store in the water. Spent 5 months and my time was up.

Seeing “Go Tell The Spartans”, at number 16 is disappointing. This movie’s greatest strength is that it symbolically encapsulates the whole Vietnam War itself in its storyline and performances.

I have seen just about all the movies listed, and IMO, We Were Soldiers and Platoon are about the most realistic and accurately l portrayed movies about Vietnam. I was in the 1st Cav, 1967-68.

If HONOR IN THE VALLEY OF TEARS and WARRIOR POV SEARCH AND DESTROY are watched in sequence it makes a great movie about an unusual infantry battalion that receives 4 MoH in 3 months along with a PUC. They are quality documentaries with real footage and reenactments. Produced by help and participants of Vietnam vets.

You forgot “The Siege of Firebase Gloria” with Wings Hauser and R. Lee Ermey.

I don’t remember how long it was between leaving ‘Nam and seeing the movie “Platoon”, but immediately during the scene where the latrine cans were being burned by the grunts, the smell of Vietnam hit me once again! It was such a sharp sensation that I will never forget it. I was in country in ’69-’70 and now remember mostly only the good times.

In April, 1958, the movie, The Young Lions was released. I came from a home where we didn’t see movies. We couldn’t afford such things.
I was a senior in high school. War had been idealized in my experiences.
Why I got to see this movie, I don’t remember. But, I never forgot that movie.
The story line draws you into understanding a German officer’s disgust with the war. He walks, unarmed, toward the American lines to surrender.
Dean Martin played a playboy who had never dirtied his uniform or performed any actual war duties. The German officer appears. The playboy character yells “Kraut!” And murders the officer.
I was crushed.
What a naive boy I was.
I’m 74 now and still remember that scene.
