We were called out to pump smoke into a suspected tunnel complex in III Corps (1970)… All we could see when we got there and met the squad was a vertical shaft that went down about 10 feet and turned. They had ‘cleared it’ with grenades. We covered the opening with a poncho liner, started the blower and dropped a red smoke grenade down the hole. The squad moved out to see if the smoke came out anywhere. It didn’t. The hole was a dead end. The next day someone went down and found a metal plate. Under the metal plate was a 500 pound dud bomb. I have no idea what they were saving it for…..
